Mechanical Engineer – Operations · Collingwood, Ontario

We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer.

 

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in mechanical and fluid dynamics, particularly in the areas of mold design, hydrodynamic analysis for ocean applications, additive manufacturing, part count reduction, product design, and finite element analysis (“FEA”). This role will involve collaborating with cross-functional teams to develop innovative products, optimize designs, and ensure high-quality manufacturing processes.

This role is based out of our Collingwood location at 20 Stewart Road.

Hours of Work: This is a full-time position working 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday to Friday

Responsibilities for this position include:

Mechanical and Fluid Design:

  • Designing and developing mechanical systems and components, including fluid handling systems for epoxy and adhesives, along with flow analysis of these materials in injection molding during assembly
  • Performing detailed calculations and simulations to ensure designs meet performance and safety requirements
  • Conducting hydrodynamic analysis for ocean-related items such as hydrophones, transducers, and towed arrays
  • Creating and reviewing technical drawings, specifications, and documentation

Additive Manufacturing:

  • Utilizing additive manufacturing techniques to develop prototypes and final products
  • Optimizing designs for additive manufacturing processes, ensuring cost-effectiveness and manufacturability
  • Keeping abreast of the latest advancements in additive manufacturing technologies and implementing best practices

Part Count Reduction:

  • Analyzing existing designs to identify opportunities for part count reduction and simplification
  • Incorporating design alterations aimed at minimizing manufacturing intricacies and expenses, all the while ensuring the integrity and performance of the product are upheld
  • Collaborating with suppliers and manufacturing teams to validate and implement design changes

Product Design:

  • Leading and contributing to the design and development of new products from concept to production
  • Working closely with cross-functional teams, including marketing, manufacturing, and quality assurance, to ensure successful product launches
  • Conducting design reviews and providing technical guidance to junior engineers

Finite Element Analysis (“FEA”):

  • Performing FEA simulations to analyze and validate the structural integrity and performance of designs
  • Interpreting and communicating FEA results to inform design decisions and improvements
  • Developing and maintaining FEA models and documentation

The ideal candidate for this position will possess the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field (master’s degree is preferred)
  • 5+ years of experience in mechanical and fluid design, product development, and manufacturing
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) and FEA tools (e.g., ANSYS, Abaqus, COMSOL)
  • Experience with additive manufacturing technologies and design for additive manufacturing
  • Strong understanding of mechanical principles, fluid dynamics, and materials science
  • Proven track record of successful product design and development
  • Experience with epoxy and adhesive migration in assembled systems
  • Experience with hydrodynamic analysis for ocean-related applications
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams & MS Project)
  • Excellent analytical skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Excellent communication (written & verbal) and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively engage with employees at all levels of the organization
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team
  • Excellent fault-finding, critical thinking & problem-solving skills
  • Able to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality
  • Strong work ethic, innovative, positive attitude, diligence & commitment
  • Candidates must be able to obtain an industry security clearance when/if requested
  • Candidates must have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada under relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations

The following would be strong assets:

  • Experience with part count reduction techniques and methodologies
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes and materials
  • Familiarity with industry standards and regulations
  • Project management experience
